Notice Overview
Viking Range, LLC is issuing this safety notice regarding compressor overheating on select Viking refrigerator models installed in confined or semi-enclosed cabinetry configurations. When installation clearances fall below the minimum requirements specified in the product installation guide, the compressor condenser coils cannot dissipate heat adequately, potentially causing the compressor to overheat and, in worst-case scenarios, present a fire risk to adjacent cabinetry materials.
Affected Viking Refrigerator Models
This notice applies to Viking Professional Series and Viking 5 Series built-in and freestanding bottom-freezer and column refrigerators with the following model prefixes:
- VRBF536 series (Professional Series, all suffix variants)
- VRBF336 series (5 Series, all suffix variants)
- VRFF336 series (French Door, all suffix variants)
- VCFB5363 series (column, all suffix variants)
- VCBB5363 series (column bottom-freezer, all suffix variants)
Risk Level
Urgency: HIGH. Prolonged compressor overheating can damage the unit irreparably and, in installations with insufficient clearance, generate heat levels capable of scorching adjacent wood or composite cabinetry.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Warm or hot surfaces on the sides or rear of the unit during normal operation
- Compressor running continuously without cycling off
- Interior temperatures rising above set point despite normal settings
- Burning or hot-plastic odor near the base or rear of the refrigerator
- Visible discoloration on cabinetry panels adjacent to the unit
Recommended Actions
- Measure the clearance between the refrigerator and surrounding cabinetry. Minimum required clearances are: 1 inch on each side, 1 inch at the top, and 2 inches at the rear. Verify these against your specific model’s installation manual.
- If clearances are insufficient, do not operate the refrigerator until the installation is corrected. Temporarily disconnect power if excessive heat is already present.
- Clean condenser coils using a vacuum or soft brush — dust accumulation compounds the overheating risk. Coils are typically located at the base or rear of the unit behind a removable grille.
- Schedule an inspection with a certified Viking service technician who can measure compressor operating temperatures and assess whether the unit has sustained internal damage.
- Consult your original installation guide or contact Viking to confirm clearance requirements for your specific model series before re-installation.
Viking Appliance Customer Support can be reached at 1-888-VIKING-1 or via vikingrange.com. Authorized service technicians can perform a compressor health check and determine whether condenser cleaning or compressor replacement is warranted.
