IMMEDIATELY close the tank valve
Turn the propane tank valve clockwise until it stops. Do not attempt to light the grill. Do not operate any other electrical switches or appliances nearby. Move away from the grill.
If the smell is very strong or you cannot locate its source, leave the area and call your gas provider.

Do not use any ignition sources
Do not press the igniter, use a lighter, or operate any electrical switches (lights, phone chargers) in the immediate area until the leak is identified and repaired. Gas can accumulate in low areas.
Propane is heavier than air and will pool at ground level. Ventilate the area by moving away, not by fanning.

Perform a soapy water leak test (tank valve closed first)
Only after the tank valve is fully closed, mix dish soap with water. With the tank valve still closed, brush the solution on the regulator connection, hose body, and hose-to-grill fitting. Open the tank valve slowly and watch for bubbles. A bubbling location is the leak point.
Do this test outdoors in open air, away from any ignition sources.
