Viking Grill UNEVEN-HT Error: Uneven grill heating

Viking Grill UNEVEN-HT: Hot Spots and Cold Spots Uneven heating on a Viking grill is almost always caused by clogged burner ports or damaged heat plates — both of which are easy to fix yourself. Start by removing the cooking grates and heat plates to expose the burner tubes. Use a stiff wire brush to […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. Uneven heating is a performance issue, not a safety hazard. The grill can be used while you address the cause. Compensate by rotating food between hotter and cooler zones until repairs are made.

Can I reset the code?

No. There is no reset — the root cause (clogged ports, damaged heat plates, or a failed burner) must be addressed directly.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: If a burner tube is visibly cracked or corroded through, If one burner produces a very large flame while adjacent burners show nothing.

Symptoms You May Notice

Hot and cold zones

Food cooks faster or burns on one side of the grill while remaining undercooked on the other.

Inconsistent grill marks

Sear marks are only visible in certain areas of the cooking surface.

Visible flame height variation

Looking through the grill, some burners have taller flames than others at the same knob setting.

Possible Causes

1

Clogged burner ports on one or more burners

Grease and debris block ports selectively, reducing flame output unevenly across the burner length.

DIY Possible
2

Damaged or missing heat plates / flame tamers

The metal plates above the burners distribute heat evenly. Warped, cracked, or missing plates create hot and cold spots directly above.

DIY Possible
3

Wind interference

Even a mild breeze can dramatically alter temperature distribution, especially on rear-burner grills.

DIY Possible
4

Failed burner tube

A cracked or corroded burner tube allows gas to escape at the wrong location or not flow evenly.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Clean all burner ports

Remove grates and heat plates. Inspect each burner tube and use a wire brush to clean every port hole. Pay attention to the section of the burner where you notice the cold spot — ports in that section are likely blocked.

Hold the burner tube up to light after cleaning to confirm ports are clear.

    Tools required
  2. 2

    Inspect and replace heat plates

Lay the heat plates back in position and look for warping, cracks, or missing sections. Warped plates that no longer lie flat create hot spots directly above. Replacement heat plates/flame tamers for Viking are available as direct-fit parts.

Even minor warping affects heat distribution significantly. If a plate wobbles or has a gap, replace it.

  3. 3

Use the wind guard and grill position

If cooking in a windy area, use the grill's wind guard accessory. Position the grill so the prevailing wind strikes the back of the grill rather than the side.

A grill thermometer placed in different zones lets you quantify the temperature difference before and after adjustments.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Burner ports are clean but one burner still won't produce a normal flame
  • Burner tube has visible cracks or holes outside the port area
  • Manifold or gas valve suspected of unequal flow
