Viking Grill LOW-FLAME Error: Weak or low flame

Viking Grill LOW-FLAME: Weak Flame That Won’t Heat Properly A sudden drop to tiny flames — especially right after connecting a propane tank — almost always means the regulator tripped its built-in safety bypass. This is a protective feature, not a malfunction, and it resets easily. Turn all burner knobs off, close the tank valve, […]

Quick Assessment

Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. The grill is safe to use at low flame but will not cook properly. Reset the regulator and clean the burner ports before your next cook. Food safety requires reaching proper cooking temperatures.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. In most cases, the regulator bypass resets by following the proper disconnect-wait-reconnect procedure. If the flame is still weak after reset, the regulator or burner ports need attention.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: If flame extinguishes completely at any knob position, If the grill cannot reach 300°F after a full regulator reset.

Symptoms You May Notice

Very small flame height

Flames are noticeably lower than normal, even at the highest knob setting.

Grill won't reach temperature

After 15 minutes of preheating, the grill temperature remains well below 400°F.

Flame disappears at medium or high

Turning knobs above medium causes the flame to go out entirely.

Possible Causes

1

Regulator in bypass/safety mode

If the burners were left on when the tank was connected, the regulator's safety device activated and is now restricting gas flow to a trickle.

DIY Possible
2

Clogged burner ports

Grease, spider webs, or debris blocking the small holes along the burner tube restricts gas flow and produces a weak, uneven flame.

DIY Possible
3

Low propane level

The propane tank is nearly empty, causing low fuel pressure and weak combustion.

DIY Possible
4

Faulty regulator

The pressure regulator has failed and is permanently restricting gas flow even after a proper reset attempt.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Reset the gas regulator

Turn all burner knobs to OFF. Turn the propane tank valve to OFF. Disconnect the regulator from the tank. Wait at least 60 seconds. Reconnect the regulator to the tank. Slowly turn the tank valve fully open. Wait 30 seconds, then light one burner normally.

This reset clears the regulator's bypass mode. It must be done in the correct order — all knobs off before disconnecting the tank.

  2. 2

    Clean the burner ports

Remove the cooking grates and heat plates. Inspect the burner tubes for clogged ports (small holes along the length). Use a stiff wire brush to scrub the ports clean. A straightened paper clip or toothpick can clear individual blocked holes.

Spider webs inside the burner venturi tube are a very common cause of low flame. Use a flexible pipe cleaner to clean the venturi inlet at the front of each burner.

  3. 3

    Check propane tank level

Weigh the tank — a standard 20 lb tank weighs about 37 lbs full and 17 lbs empty. Alternatively, pour warm water down the side of the tank and feel for where it turns cold — that level is your propane fill level.

If in doubt, swap to a known-full tank for testing.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:

  • Regulator reset procedure does not restore normal flame height
  • Burner ports are clean and tank is full but flame remains weak
  • Regulator body feels corroded or shows visible damage
